GM concept is just one of examples of electronics and cars converging

New safety ergonomics in autos ...

"The mash-up of electronic and wireless gadgets and automobiles continued to gain momentum this week at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show, where several local companies had major displays and presentations.

Troy-based Delphi Corp. showed off two systems at the show in Las Vegas, including an active safety system with adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation with automatic braking, which is nearly ready for production.

"Delphi has reached another milestone in the evolution of providing safety systems with the introduction of the new collision detection system," said Beth Schwarting, executive in charge of Delphi's Safety Product business unit. "Delphi is helping to take vehicle safety to the next level with these cutting-edge systems."

The Delphi safety system sorts data collected by radar and vision sensors to increase road safety with seamless driver support, providing adaptive cruise control and collision warning alarms. The vision system also provides lane departure warning and driver alert signals, Delphi officials said.

The Delphi Information, Convenience, Protection demonstration vehicle showed how ergonomics and engineering can help keep drivers focused on the road.

"We are helping to integrate the driver with the vehicle system using human machine interface (HMI) in the ICP vehicle," said Jugal Vijayvargiya, Delphi Electronics & Safety Controls & Security lead executive.

"The system effectively connects the driver to the vehicle cockpit and control functions and minimizes driver distraction. In addition to enhancing safety, the (human-machine) element of a vehicle is very important in overall consumer satisfaction and acceptance of their cars and trucks."

Magna International Inc., another major local supplier, demonstrated a navigation system integrated with a vehicle's rear-view mirror and the "Total BlindZoneManagement" product line, which reduces vehicle blind spots behind the driver."    (Continued via The Oakland Press)    [Ergonomics Resources]
